Advanced & Standard

How lessons work

We’ll begin by helping you understand the requirements of the Reading to Write module and from there we’ll develop your creative, discursive and persuasive writing skills, and make sure that you know how to write an A-range reflection. After that, I'll help you with the texts you’re studying under Module A and Module B, covering all the content and answering any questions you have. We’ll write up perfect, polished essays and notes for each assessment. I have a large collection of exemplar essays and notes from past students who achieved high marks for every module, and this will help you perfect your essays and notes.

Finally, we’ll turn to exam skills. I’ll set lots of practice questions, both timed and untimed, typed and handwritten, until you’re confident enough to answer any essay question under timed exam conditions.

Feedback outside of lessons

I'm always happy to help students between lessons, either by marking your work or answering questions, depending on my availability. If I feel the questions are too complicated for a quick response, I will recommend booking an extra lesson.

Texts

I have exemplar essays and resources on the following texts that are frequently studied in Year 11:

  • Othello by William Shakespeare

  • Film adaptations of Othello

  • W. H. Auden poetry

  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

  • Are You Beautiful Today? by Romaine Moreton

  • Wag the Dog by Barry Levinson

  • William Butler Yeats poetry

  • Gwen Harwood poetry

Please note that Year 11 texts vary depending on the school. If your text isn't listed above, I will still be able to help.

Pricing & lesson types

I recommend a one-to-one 1.5 hour lesson for Advanced & Standard English per week, but I also offer group lessons and 1 hour spots if you prefer. I only charge week-to-week and we can start lessons on a no-obligation basis to make sure you're happy with how everything is going before continuing. Contact me now to get a free consultation and to discuss fees, which start as low as $55 per hour but can vary depending on lesson type and availability. Spots are limited, so please reach out to see if I can fit you in.

Adv & Std
Ext 1

Extension 1

How lessons work

I'm happy to help you with just Extension 1, or both Advanced and Extension 1 together. Extension 1 can be a very demanding subject, with a strong emphasis placed on original and in-depth responses to texts. I can teach you how to delve deep into literary concepts and philosophical ideas in a way that will impress your markers.

We'll start by covering the content in your prescribed texts and go over the best essay structure for an A-range essay in Extension 1. Then I'll explain how to obtain top marks when responding to unseen texts (which can be very complex in Ext 1), and how to write creatively and discursively according to the subject's criteria. I'm most looking forward to helping you with your mid-year project (known as an Independent Research Project in some schools) where we get to select our own topic and texts and write a long multimodal response.

As with Advanced above, I will set a lot of practice questions to prepare for exams, both timed and untimed, typed and handwritten, until you're fully prepared to answer any essay question under exam conditions.

Every school sets different texts for Year 11 Extension 1 English. I will be able to guide you and provide resources on anything you're studying, including Shakespeare, poetry, novels, short stories, plays and films.
